CLP Government, police crackdown continues in Alice Springs

A three-week police and government crackdown in Alice Springs has netted 77 arrests as the CLP continues a coordinated response to support residents over the summer period.

The police’s Operation Ludlow launched on 14 November, combining high-visibility patrols, enforcement in crime hotspots, and collaboration with other government agencies to enhance community safety.

In addition to 77 arrests, there have been 22 infringement notices for the CLP Government’s new nuisance public drinking laws.

Under the recently introduced Declan’s Law, there have been two wanding operations in high-risk areas in Alice Springs with 350 people scanned, five weapons seized, and five cautions issued.

“Our government is getting on with the job and delivering a response which prioritises public safety, addresses community concerns to reduce anti-social behaviour, property offences and personal crime in Alice Springs,” said Treasurer and Member for Namatjira, Bill Yan.

Government agencies are working closely with non-government service providers to ensure there is high visibility policing and patrols, alcohol support and treatment pathways, support services for young people and rough sleepers and a comprehensive free school holiday program.

The Alice Springs community will be updated regularly over the summer period.

Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment and Member for Braitling, Joshua Burgoyne, said: “Reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in Alice Springs, and across the Territory, is a top priority for our government.”

“Unlike the previous government which created a crime crisis in their eight years in office, our government urgently passed our Reducing Crime laws in the first sittings of Parliament in October, and we have given police more powers to do their jobs properly.”

Mr Yan added: “The government and police cannot deal with crime prevention alone across the Territory; it requires a whole of community buy-in where individuals need to take personal responsibility for their own actions.”
