Coding skills are fast becoming a core part of digital literacy, and Ararat kids can now build those skills close to home at Coding Club, returning to Ararat Library for a new term in August.
From Monday 10 August 2026, Coding Club at Ararat Library will give children aged 8-11 a practical, hands-on introduction to the kind of digital skills that are increasingly important at school, at work, and in everyday life. Coding Club will run during school term from 4-5pm each week, with children able to choose either a Monday or Tuesday session at Ararat Library.
This year, participants will have the chance to design their own computer game or dive into hands-on robotics using the library’s fleet of Sphero Bolt+ robots, exploring how code can be used to drive robots, interact with the physical environment, and bring their ideas to life.
Participants will learn how coding underpins the technology they use every day, while building confidence to create, experiment, and solve problems using digital tools.
Coding is widely recognised as a key building block for digital literacy, helping children understand how apps, websites, and devices actually work, rather than just consuming content.
Ararat Rural City Council Chief Executive Officer, Dr Tim Harrison, said Coding Club is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting local families with accessible learning opportunities. “Digital skills are no longer optional for young people, and regional kids deserve the same opportunities to explore technology as their peers in larger centres,” Dr Harrison said. “By bringing Coding Club into our library each week, we are giving local children a safe, welcoming space to learn how code works, try out new ideas, and see that these skills can open doors – whether that’s at school, in further study, or in jobs that don’t even exist yet.”
Sessions are designed to be flexible, so families can join in at any point during the term without needing to commit for the full season. Laptops are available for use during Coding Club, so there is no need to bring a device from home.
