In response to Recommendation 18.6 of the Commission of Inquiry, the Tasmanian Government is establishing a Commission for Children and Young People.
Today the Tasmanian Government tabled the draft Commission for Children and Young People Bill 2024, which is now open for consultation.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said that the delivery of all 191 recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry is of the highest importance.
“There is nothing more serious nor more important for our Government than the implementation of every single recommendation from the Commission of Inquiry,” the Attorney-General said.
“We have begun work to establish a Commission for Children and Young People, which will encompass both the current functions of the Independent Regulator and the Commissioner for Children and Young People.
“The Tasmanian Government has developed a draft Bill to establish a new Commission for Children and Young People, establish the key oversight roles within the Commission, and provide the Commission with appropriate functions and powers.
“At this stage a minimum 12-week consultation period is planned, to support meaningful and ongoing engagement with stakeholders and partners.
“We will use the next few months to listen to children and young people, people with lived experience, Tasmanian Aboriginal people, and community organisations to ensure their views and concerns are addressed in the final legislation.
“The implementation of all 191 recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry is vitally important to the successful delivery of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.”
The draft Bill is available on the Department of Justice website for consultation.
