Commitment to preventive cardiovascular healthcare will improve the heartbeat of Australia’s healthcare system

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) says commitment by both sides of federal government to invest in preventive cardiovascular healthcare delivered by GPs will save Australian lives.

President of the RACGP Dr Harry Nespolon said promises by both major parties to fund MBS items for preventive cardiovascular healthcare provided by GPs if elected this year meant Australian patients would win, no matter the outcome of this year’s federal election.

“It is pleasing to see our political leaders increasing their focus on preventive health and commit to protecting the community from cardiovascular disease. We see this as the first step in moving from an exclusive disease management system to a true healthcare system,” Dr Nespolon said.

“Cardiovascular disease is Australia’s leading cause of death and illness, so any move to reduce its impact on our community is welcomed by GPs and their healthcare teams.

“MBS items which allow Australian patients to visit their GP and check up on the health of the heart will save lives.”

Dr Nespolon said GPs and their practice teams are Australia’s most accessed healthcare service, providing more than 150 million MBS-subsidised services to patients each year.

“General practice is at the core of Australia’s very successful healthcare system,” Dr Nespolon said.

“Given the clear impact general practice has on the health of the nation, commitment to preventive healthcare provided by specialist GPs, like what we have seen from both major parties, is essential.

“All funding for the preventive healthcare GPs provide our patients is absolutely critical. It will ensure our patients are healthier for longer.”
