Community champions triumph in multicultural awards

  • Awards designed to recognise and promote the value that multiculturalism brings to Western Australia
  • Individuals and organisations recognised for their outstanding contributions to our society
  • Awards launch Harmony Week celebrations
  • Harmony Week is a WA initiative, running from March 15 to 21 each year 
  • The 2022 Western Australian Multicultural Awards have recognised 10 individuals and organisations for their outstanding contributions towards a more inclusive and equitable WA.

    The awards presentation on Monday March 14 was the launch event for Harmony Week 2022.

    Harmony Week is an opportunity for all Western Australians to explore and appreciate this State’s wealth of cultural, religious, linguistic and ethnic diversity.

    The award winners are:

    • Outstanding Individual Achievement Award: Dr Bernadette Wright;
    • Youth Award: Zahra Al Hilaly;
    • Community Organisation Award – Culturally and Linguistically Diverse: Umbrella Multicultural Community Care Services Inc;
    • Community Organisation Award – General: Royal Life Saving Western Australia;
    • Local Government Award: City of Stirling;
    • Art Award: Sukhjit Kaur Khalsa;
    • Sportsperson of the Year Award: Peter Bol;
    • Premier’s Community Response and Recovery Award: Sikh Gurdwara Perth Inc;
    • Sir Ronald Wilson Leadership Award: Hayden Marchetto; and
    • Laksiri Jayasuriya Lifetime Community Service Award: Nick Agocs OAM.

    As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

    “Well done to all of the winners of this year’s Western Australian Multicultural Awards.

    “Western Australia is fortunate to be home to numerous culturally and linguistically diverse communities, all of whom contribute to our State’s rich multicultural makeup.

    “My Government is committed to promoting our cultural diversity and increasing the opportunities of all Western Australians to achieve their full potential in life.”

    As stated by Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Minister Tony Buti:

    “I congratulate the Western Australians recognised in the 2022 Western Australian Multicultural Awards and thank them for their unstinting contributions to building inclusiveness in our community.
