Community invited to Tropical Tree Day

Take part in Tropical Tree Day this Sunday to plant native tree species ahead of the wet season.

Join Council at Nelly Bay Esplanade on Magnetic Island from 9am to 10:30am to lend a hand by planting native species along the foreshore.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said the tree planting would help maintain the health of the beach.

“Each tree planted will help prevent coastal erosion and provide an improved habitat for native wildlife,” Cr Soars said.

“Small acts like planting trees can create huge benefits for our natural environment, which is why I’d love to see our community throw their support behind this great initiative.

“We’ll have refreshments on site and a native plant for you to take home as a thank you for your efforts. All the tools you’ll need will be provided, just make sure you have enclosed shoes, sun-safe clothing and a water bottle with you.

“If you can’t make it to Council’s event, you can sign up to host your own. Just head to treeday.planetark.org to host your own planting session.”
