Community urged to help prevent coronavirus

Vaccine injection given by a doctor

The NSW Government asks individuals and businesses to help prevent the potential spread of the coronavirus ahead of the flu season.

As an individual you can help by following simple hygiene measures like

  • regular hand washing
  • sneezing into your elbow
  • staying at home if you’re feeling sick
  • seeing your local doctor for minor illnesses or injuries.

Businesses can help by

  • providing alcohol hand rub in the workplace
  • asking staff to stay home if they are feeling unwell
  • providing staff with technology so that they can work from home where necessary.

NSW Health has planned extensively for a COVID-19 pandemic and strengthened its response to virus outbreaks.

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said the spread of COVID-19 in multiple countries outside mainland China demonstrates how quickly the virus can spread from person to person.

“While the few COVID-19 cases in NSW to date have been mild, the global spread of the virus, coupled with flu season approaching, means the situation for our hospitals could change quickly so we’re asking everyone to plan now,” Dr Chant said.

NSW Health also recommends getting a flu shot. The flu vaccine doesn’t cure COVID-19 but helps reduce the severity and spread of the common flu.

The use of face masks is not recommended for people who are not feeling sick, face masks should be saved for people who are unwell only.
