Construction of Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre 90 per cent complete

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin’s flagship infrastructure project, the Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre, has reached a significant milestone with construction 90 per cent complete and water starting to go into the 25-metre pool.

The $26.8 million centre, made possible by an investment of $19.3 million from the City of Darwin supported by $7.5 million from the Australian Government, is set to be a dynamic community hub when it opens in mid-2024.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the centre will provide safe, accessible and healthy exercise options for the community.

“We are delighted to see how well the Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre is progressing, with construction already at 90 per cent completion,” Mr Vatskalis said.

“The new centre isn’t just about pools; it’s about accessibility, engagement and a healthier, happier future for locals and visitors.

“The water is starting to go into the 25-metre, six-lane pool which is very exciting.

“Once complete, the Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre is going to be a world-class, accessible recreational space to play, swim, eat and relax.

“It will be a modern, family-friendly place that will provide social and physical benefits for our community,” he said.

The Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre will be open to residents and the wider community and has been specially designed for people of all ages to use and enjoy.

“We are confident this will be a very special place to be enjoyed by generations of families and the community.”

Additional features at the centre include a resort-style lagoon featuring an aqua tower, fountains, water squirts; a dry play area featuring a unique sensory dome; a grassy lounge lawn featuring a basketball half-court and plenty of open space; swimming club rooms and leased spaces for allied health and associated facilities.

Design of the aquatic centre also features maximum accessibility options, including zero-depth access to all pools and equal access to amenities, buildings, playgrounds and open play and recreation areas.

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Solomon (Darwin and Palmerston) Luke Gosling OAM MP:

“The Northern Suburbs needed a new 50 metre pool and additional pools for sport and leisure activities, for all ages, and that is exactly what the City of Darwin – with financial support from the Federal Government – is delivering.

“Investing in community infrastructure is one of the many strengths of a Labor Government and this project delivers on all fronts.

“The Caz pool redevelopment will provide a modern, safe, and family-friendly sports and recreational facility that will improve health and well-being outcomes across our local community.

“My team and I have been keenly observing the aquatic centres progress from the back of our Electorate Office in Casuarina. We are looking forward to swapping the noise and dust of construction for the happy sounds of families and school groups enjoying this great facility.”
