Work has started on the new $14 million Police Citizen Youth Club (PCYC) Logan at Cronulla Park in Slacks Creek.

The new PCYC is jointly funded by Logan City Council and the Queensland Government.

City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said since the state handed the site back to Council in 2017, a lot of work had been done to plan a PCYC that would offer the community better facilities to be active and healthy.

“We worked closely with the PCYC to design a building that delivers their programs and supports the young people of Logan,” Cr Power said.

“Keeping fit and active is so important in bringing the community together, and ensuring both mental and physical health.”

The 4700 square metre modern, single-level building will enable the PCYC to deliver a range of services and activities from their after-school care program through to martial arts.

It also includes a gymnastics hall for up to 70 people – the largest in the city.

The delivery of the PCYC aligns with Logan City Council’s Active Logan Strategy 2016-2028, which encourages people to lead active, healthy lives.

Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said the PCYC would benefit a wide cross-section of the community, including during its construction.

“The new building will cater for gymnastics, fitness and gym, wrestling, boxing and martial arts groups, youth outreach programs and community groups,” said Mr de Brenni.

“More than 42 full-time jobs will be supported through the construction of the PCYC, which will be an important community hub – a place where people of all ages, from all walks of life can come to engage in fun, physical activities together.”

Queensland Treasurer and Member for Woodridge Cameron Dick said the local jobs being created by the project were of huge importance during the COVID pandemic.

“Infrastructure equals jobs. Construction creates employment. And every job supported right now is so important,” Mr Dick said.

“It’s fantastic to see work getting underway on what’s shaping to be another excellent sport and recreation outcome for our city, and our government is pleased to be partnering with council to deliver this for Logan.”

Member for Waterford Shannon Fentiman said the new centre is great news for local families and will cater for the fast-growing Logan community.

“The PCYC will continue to provide a hub for sports and community activities for years to come,” Ms Fentiman said.

“I can’t wait to visit once it’s completed next year.”

PCYC Queensland Chief Executive Officer Phil Schultz said PCYC Logan will be relocated from its existing home in Logan Central.

“We will hand back our current facility to Logan City Council and move into the new PCYC Logan club facility when it is ready in 2021,” Mr Schultz said.

“We are thrilled with the concept plans and now the start of construction, and we look forward to supporting more young people and the community through our activities, programs, outside school hours care and more.

“Support from the Queensland Government and Logan City Council for this new facility allows PCYC Queensland to continue delivering our vision of building safer, healthier communities through youth development, and aligns perfectly with their priorities of keeping Queensland communities healthy, safe and active.”

When completed, the Cronulla Park PCYC redevelopment will feature:

  • A rhythmic and artistic gymnastics hall
  • A 24-hour gym and boxing gym
  • Multi-purpose rooms suitable for dancing, martial arts and other activities
  • Outside school hours care for up to 100 children
  • Upgraded road access and carpark
  • Administration area for PCYC staff

Construction on the PCYC is scheduled to be completed by April next year.
