Containing spread of Weeds – New Strategy Launched

NT Government

The protection of our natural environment is important for the Territory’s economy and for future generations.

By securing our natural assets we unlock social, cultural and economic opportunities for Territorians.

This is why the Territory Labor Government has invested in developing weed fighting strategies across the NT with the Darwin Weeds Strategy released this week.

Budget 2021 sees more than $6.5 million injected into weeds management in the Territory, which includes funding for the successful Gamba Army. We will continue to invest in the spraying of gamba grass and other weeds, better coordinating activities on government land and assisting private landholders in controlling weeds on theirs

Weeds management on Aboriginal lands will also be supported through the Territory Government’s Aboriginal Ranger grants program. This grants program has been continued for a further four years with $12 million invested to support a range of work including weed management.

Following on from the other regional strategies, the Darwin Regional Weeds Strategy sets out a strategic approach for the Territory Government and key stakeholders to reduce the impact of weeds in the Region from 2021-2026, and was developed through targeted consultation with key stakeholders, including members of the Gamba Grass Weed Advisory Committee.

The Strategy aims to protect the Darwin region’s natural, economic and cultural assets, and:

Identifies the principal weed threats to the Darwin region and describes best practice weed management strategies to mitigate these threats;Provides clear regional weed management priorities through an evidence-based consultative decision making process; andProvides clear, achievable and measurable regional management actions/goals.

Recently, the Territory Labor Government announced the continuation of the Gamba Army with this job-creating and weed management initiative set to kick off again in the coming weeks.

Quotes from the Minister for Environment, Eva Lawler:

“It’s important we stay on top of and control the spread of weeds across the Northern Territory.

“In the Darwin Region, and the Northern Territory more broadly, there is a continued risk of introduction of new weeds and spread of existing weeds by deliberate and accidental actions of people. For example, weeds can escape from gardens, be accidently transported with livestock, be spread by slashers and sold in hay or landscaping products.

“Being one of four weeds strategies across the Territory the Darwin Regional Weeds Strategy aims to protect our natural, economic and cultural assets.”
