More than 18,000 residents in Cottesloe and Mundaring will soon be able to recycle their food organics and garden organics (FOGO) waste, following the introduction of the three-bin FOGO kerbside collection service.
The Town of Cottesloe currently has a three-bin system that includes a garden organics (GO) bin, with the transition to FOGO expected to roll out from May 2022.
Town of Cottesloe will receive $45,302 towards the transition of 3,271 households with lime green lidded GO bins to FOGO, and the Shire of Mundaring will receive $310,800 to assist in transitioning 14,800 residents to lime green lidded FOGO bins.
Residents in these suburbs will also receive in-home infrastructure, including a kitchen caddy for food scraps including tea bags, coffee grounds, paper towels, meat and vegetable scraps and fruit peels.
The McGowan Government has committed $20 million of funding to support local governments to transition to three-bin FOGO services, through the Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO program.
The State’s Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 has a target to deliver a harmonised kerbside collection system, which includes FOGO, in the Perth and Peel regions by 2025.
In November, the McGowan Government released a step-by-step guide to assist more local governments in planning and implementing better practice FOGO collection services.

As stated by Environment Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:
“It’s great to see the three-bin FOGO kerbside system will soon roll out to over 3,200 households in the Town of Cottesloe and 14,800 households in the Shire of Mundaring.
“FOGO bins that collect food and garden waste can achieve recovery rates of around 65 per cent. By achieving these recovery rates, we can significantly reduce waste ending up in landfill.
“The Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO program helps local governments in the transition to three-bin FOGO services with grant funding. The Waste Authority is currently supporting 18 local governments so that residents make the most out of the three-bin system.
“I encourage local governments to join the Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO program which will open again for funding application in early 2022.”
