Council budget commits to sustainable future for Townsville

Townsville City Council is maintaining its strong commitment to the city’s unique natural and built environment through an investment of more than $8 million into sustainable practices in its 2023/24 Budget and Operational Plan.

Council’s commitment to innovative solutions is focused on future-proofing Townsville’s eco-friendly footprint and boosting the city’s sustainability economy.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said Council was investing now into the long-term plan to deliver ongoing savings for the community.

“In this budget we’re shining a spotlight on waste services and sustainable energy, with $3.1 million being invested into solar projects,” Cr Soars said.

“Over the past few years, we have been installing more solar panels on the roofs of Council buildings, and in this budget we are committing to continue to do that.

“Further to this, Council is investing more than $380,000 into battery and microgrid investments and $375,000 into energy performance contracts and optimisation tools.”

Water and Waste Committee chairperson Russ Cook said Council was committing more than $900,000 into free domestic green waste services in the 2023/24 budget.

“Part of Council’s responsibility to take care of our natural and built environment and to help our community embrace sustainable practices in their day-to-day life,” Cr Cook said.

“A big part of encouraging sustainability in our communities is making it accessible for all. We’re continuing our investment into minimising waste and all residents will be able to dispose of their domestic green waste for free at our transfer stations across the city.

“As an organisation we are working towards having zero waste to landfill in Townsville by 2030, and we’re committed to making it easier than ever for locals to reduce their household and business waste.

“Council will continue to innovate in the sustainability space to help make Townsville more sustainable as we work towards a greener future for our growing population.”
