Council received the Annual Report 2019 from the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee at the July Council Meeting.
The Heritage Advisory Committee was established in 2012 to provide advice to Council on how to preserve and promote the unique cultural heritage of Greater Shepparton, and advocate for cultural heritage matters across the municipality.
Its membership includes Councillors, representatives of historical groups from across the municipality, community representatives, Council’s Heritage Adviser and Council officers.
The Committee held a number of successful events in 2019 to raise awareness and promote understanding of the diverse cultural heritage, most notably the Heritage Open Days on 22-23 March 2019, and the Greater Shepparton Cultural Heritage Awards, which were presented on 27 April 2019.
The Committee also provided invaluable input into Council’s Heritage Strategy 2019 and the Heritage Grants Program, as well as undertaking the development of interpretive signage for key sites in Shepparton, communicating with state-level organisations such as the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, and providing support for heritage related community projects.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Seema Abdullah, said Council was very grateful for the tireless and committed work of the Committee members who so generously volunteer their time.
“The Heritage Advisory Committee is an integral part of Council’s approach to preserving and conserving Greater Shepparton’s irreplaceable cultural heritage for present and future residents to experience and enjoy,” she said.
“It’s unfortunate that the COVID-19 restrictions have impacted the Committee’s activities this year, but we look forward to future events that showcase the richness of our history.”
