Council endorses Geelong City Deal

Council has
agreed to endorse the Geelong City Deal, paving the way for more than $355
million in joint funding to be pumped into the revitalisation of the Geelong region
and the Great Ocean Road visitor economy.

We will work with the federal and state governments to deliver
infrastructure projects, which are set to create significant employment and
attract more visitors to our region.

As part of
the 10-year plan, Geelong’s own Convention and Exhibition Centre will be
constructed, the revitalisation of Central Geelong will continue, the Deakin
University Future Economy Precinct in Waurn Ponds will be expanded and stage
one of the Geelong Safe Harbour Precinct will be carried out.

Subject to budget endorsement, Council has
committed to providing the following:

  • $7.28 million towards the Gheringhap Street
    drain works
  • $3 million for the Geelong Convention and
    Exhibition Centre
  • $3 million to the Central Geelong
    Revitalisation Works
  • $3 million towards the Geelong Safe Harbour
    project
  • $900,000 into Smart Parking activities and
  • $250,000 into Smart City initiatives such
as safety cameras and Renew Geelong.

Council is
focused on delivering a thriving, sustainable economy and growing our tourism, to
support investment, employment and lifestyle opportunities in our region.

Mayor Bruce Harwood – Chair – Economic Development Portfolio

This is an exciting time for the Greater Geelong region. The Council and
many others have worked hard for several years to get these projects funded,
particularly the Geelong Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Geelong Safe
Harbour plan.

The Geelong City Deal will deliver important infrastructure and
upgrades that will increase employment opportunities for locals, improve our lifestyle
and attract more tourists to our fine region.

Councillor Trent Sullivan – Deputy Chair – Economic Development Portfolio

We are tremendously lucky to have the deal,
many cities are fighting for this funding and I recommend the funding. I do
agree and share with the praises and frustrations outlined at last night’s
council meeting.

I would like to publicly acknowledge the work and advocacy
of Mayor Bruce Harwood on this project.
