A revamped and activated Memorial Plaza in Corowa was opened to the public on Friday evening, with features of the new space amazing attendees.
The Memorial Plaza upgrade project, led by the Federation Youth Council included installation of public Wi-Fi, café style and bench seating, signage, an electronic community notice board, wooden panel roofing, flood and festoon lighting, a drinking fountain and a new interactive mural by artist, Kade Sarte, inspired by the Murray River.
Following the official opening there was a community youth led free event with live music from acoustic performer Molly Williams, tapas from Barrel and Brew and outdoor games.
Federation Council Mayor, Cr Patrick Bourke said the delivery of this project has certainly transformed the Memorial Plaza space into an inclusive, vibrant and community friendly youth space.
“The delivery of this project is something that our Youth Council should be so proud of,” he said.
“The NSW Government has again been instrumental in this development and we thank Member for Albury Justin Clancy for his unwavering support, care and passion consistently displayed for Federation Council and our communities. This project is another fine example of what the NSW State Government, Council and the community can achieve, when we work together on improving the livability of our communities.”
Mayor Bourke said Council would like to congratulate the Federation Youth Council, and supporting staff on achieving this fantastic community initiative.
“I look forward to this new space providing many hours of enjoyment for our residents and tourists for many years to come,” he said.
Federation Youth Council Mayor, Cr Maxim Blockley said the Youth Council saw the Memorial Plaza space as a great opportunity to activate a community friendly area in a way that encourages everyone to catch up with friends over a coffee, have a picnic or pop up community events for everyone to enjoy.
“What started with a mural inspired by our local wildlife back in 2019 grew to the designs and finally the completed project that you see here today – which we think looks amazing,” he said.
“Projects like this start with an idea, however could not be completed without the support of the Streets as Shared Spaces grant provided by the NSW Government and of course the hard work by Federation Council. The Federation Youth Council is very excited to use this space for a range of events in the future and we hope that the community will be as well.”
Council would like to thank the NSW Government for the funding, project partners Kennedy Builders, Powelly’s Paint & Rendering, artist Kade Fielder, Council staff who coordinated the project management and congratulate the Federation Youth Council on the culmination of fantastic work.
The Sanger Street Plaza upgrade is a Federation Youth Council initiative funded through the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces Fund.
