The Sunshine Coast Falcons will continue to deliver strong social and economic benefits for our region after agreeing to enter into a new two year partnership with Sunshine Coast Council.
The Falcons’ request for a new partnership agreement with Council for the 2020 and 2021 Queensland Rugby League (QRL) Intrust Super Cup seasons was endorsed at today’s (January 30) Ordinary Meeting of Council.
Tourism, Sport and Major Events Councillor Jason O’Pray said the new partnership arrangement would deliver numerous positives for the Sunshine Coast.
“The Sunshine Coast Falcons are our premier Rugby League team and their presence and prosperity is vital to our region for a number of economic and social reasons,” Cr O’Pray said.
“The Falcons and their under 20s’ Colts team provide an important pathway for elite young Rugby League talent in our region.
“The success of the Falcons in reaching the 2017 Grand Final and setting records for the most wins in a QRL regular season last year has also delivered fantastic exposure for the Sunshine Coast via live free-to-air television coverage of numerous Falcons matches.
“A strong Falcons is also important in maintaining and building interest in the game of rugby league in our region.
“Thanks to a strong and sustainable tenant at our Sunshine Coast Stadium, council has successfully entered into negotiations with the NRL and QRL to stage events such as NRL regular season games, NRL trial games and the upcoming Qld Women’s State of Origin fixture.”
The new partnership between Council and the Falcons will include free use of Sunshine Coast Stadium, lighting usage, event support staff and share of game day profits.
Council also provided a $290,000 contribution to match a State Government / QRL grant for the new $550,000 Falcons training facility at Sunshine Coast Stadium.
