Council welcomes all to Community Tree Planting Day

Townsville City Council is hosting a community tree planting day on Sunday 7 May from 8:30-10am at Rex Prior Park on Hindley Street, Currajong.

All community members are welcome and encouraged to participate in this free event as Council continues its commitment to the growth and maintenance of our natural local environment.

Council will supply the gardening equipment and the plants, with volunteers encouraged to wear sun protection, gloves and closed in shoes and to bring water.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Maurie Soars said the Community Tree Planting Day was a fun way to become involved in conservation.

“We encourage all of community members to take pride in their open spaces and enhance their surroundings in our beautiful city of Townsville,” Cr Soars said.

“We have a mixture of native species that will be monitored and maintained by Council’s Environmental Restoration Team for three months until they become self-sufficient.

“These plants will provide shade, attract birds and butterflies, and all require low water levels to thrive.”

Free refreshments and a take-home native plant will be provided to volunteers at the event, as a thank-you for their involvement.
