Creation stories and cultural connections will be shared by an acclaimed first nation artist and her daughter at Isaac’s premier nature festival this weekend.
St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend will be the picturesque back drop to Jenuarrie’s creative play as she shares her knowledge in the kite making workshops of her cultural heritage stories as a Koinjmal woman from the eastern coastal plains of Central Queensland between Mackay and Rockhampton.
Jenuarrie is an artist, potter and printmaker. Her daughter Samarla Deshong will also conduct culture walks around the Wetlands where she will share stories about the Koinjmal First Peoples and their connection to the wetlands.
Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said through arts and cultural practice, our region’s people create, connect, celebrate, champion and cultivate our communities.
“When we talk about the value of arts and culture, we always start with its intrinsic value,” Mayor Baker said.
“This is what helps feed, power and build liveable communities.
“Arts and culture can energise our lives and power our emotional world.
“We’re so proud to welcome a notable talent like Jenuarrie who since 2017 is one of five indigenous artists whose works were projected onto the Sydney Opera House sails nightly in the water light show titled Badu Gili.”
Marvel at St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend artist-in-residence Rob Spedding in action as he creates lifelike drawings of flora, fauna and landscape using coloured pencils.
Moranbah artist Lynnie Busk will demonstrate the basics of acrylic flow painting and encourage visitors to unlock their passion for colour and creativity.
The artists featuring at St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend is thanks to a Queensland Government investment in creative and cultural experiences through the Isaac Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).
Queensland Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch said this strengthens regional communities, boosts cultural tourism, and enhances the quality of life in rural and remote towns and cities.
“RADF is a unique partnership between the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council to support local talent, unite communities and celebrate the arts across the state,” Ms Enoch said.
“The Queensland Government, through Arts Queensland, is contributing $2.08 million in 2018-19 in partnership with 58 councils state wide to help deliver cultural experiences which align with local priorities.”
Visitors and residents who are attending are being reminded that the St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend is a cash only event.
St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend is now a single use plastic water bottle free event this year.
The general admission ticket includes a complimentary reusable water bottle and water refill stations will be available.
This is a cash-only event as Eftpos and ATM facilities are not located at the venue.
