Creating Jobs, Supporting Local Business: Austin Lane Revamp

Making sure there is a pipeline of works for Territorians during the coronavirus pandemic – and ensuring our CBD is ready for the rebound – is a key aim of the Territory Labor Government.

Along with the City of Darwin, the Territory Government is releasing a tender of works in the coming week for the design, development and construction of a dedicated space to support community activities and events, such as street parties and festivals, along Austin Lane and Spain Place in the Darwin CBD.

These job creating infrastructure enhancements are part of the $200 million Darwin City Deal spend and include:

  • Improved paving;
  • Improved lighting; and
  • Green and shading.

Works will commence in May 2020 and will support 40 Territory jobs.

This project will link with the two completed Austin Lane covered walkways, newly planted trees, seating and kerbing upgrades.

The Austin Lane works form part of a broader vision for a cooler, revitalised CBD that includes the Civic and State Square Masterplan Redevelopment.

All of these works are about creating jobs, supporting locals and making the CBD a better place to work and visit.

As noted by the Member for Port Darwin, Paul Kirby:

“The Territory Labor Government is focussed on creating jobs and supporting local business during the coronavirus pandemic.

“This Government is backing Territory businesses – making sure that local jobs come first.

“Our Government is doing critical work, and as local member I’ve been I’ve been advocating for projects that will further shape our Darwin city into a place where people want to visit, stay and invest.”

As noted by the City of Darwin, Lord Mayor, Kon Vatskalis:
