Tell us a bit about who you are and what kind of creative work you make

Louisa-Chan-1.png

My name is Louisa Chan, and I am an Australian artist based In Ryde. Painting gives me a sense of purpose and a deep connection to the natural and spiritual world. In my creative work, I strive to create uplifting and vibrant paintings that explore themes of identity, colour, and the beauty of the natural world. My Smiling Girl series, in particular, delves into my Chinese Australian heritage and has resonated with those who share similar experiences. I have been honoured to be a finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Award twice and to have my artwork featured at the S.H. Ervin Gallery. I am constantly evolving as an artist and excited to see where my creative journey will take me next.

Whereabouts do you look for creative ideas? Who or what inspires you?
Louisa-Chan-2.png

I find creative ideas from a variety of sources. I love exploring nature and finding inspiration in its beauty and intricacies. I also look to other artists and designers for inspiration, both contemporary and historical. The colours, textures, and patterns of different cultures and their art forms also inspire me. But above all, my relationship with Jesus Christ is my greatest source of inspiration.

What has been the highlight of your creative career so far?

The highlight of my creative career so far has been exhibiting my artwork at the Pave D’Orsay in Paris, France. It was a surreal experience to showcase my art in such an iconic cultural capital and connect with an international audience. It was incredibly fulfilling to see my paintings resonate with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

What’s your favourite part of working as an artist/creative?

Louisa-Chan-4.png

My favourite part of working as an artist is the freedom to express myself and bring my imagination to life on the canvas. It’s a wonderful feeling to create something that resonates with others and evokes emotions or inspires contemplation.

Do you have any rituals or routines that help you be more creative?

I find that taking regular walks in nature and practicing mindfulness meditation in the healing presence of God, music and prayer, helps to clear my mind and foster creative thinking. I also have a dedicated workspace where I can focus and experiment without distractions.

Do you have any top tips for emerging artists and creatives?

My top tips for emerging artists and creatives just starting out would be to stay true to yourself and your vision. Don’t be afraid to take risks and experiment with different mediums and styles. Surround yourself with a supportive community of fellow artists who can provide feedback and encouragement. And most importantly, keep creating and never stop learning.
