The Albanese Labor Government welcomes the CSIRO-led research mission to help propel Australia to a low-emissions economy.
Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic said partnerships between research institutes, government and industry would result in more than $90 million of investment in the initiative.
“CSIRO’s Towards Net Zero Mission is a great program that will use large-scale research to help Australian industries reduce their emissions and stay competitive in a decarbonising global economy,” Minister Husic said.
Sectors where emissions reductions are difficult, like steel and agriculture, will benefit from focused research in decarbonisation technology specific to their industries.
“The mission’s goals will include identifying what is required to develop new processes for low-emissions steel and iron ore production, and help our aviation industry develop the feedstocks to convert to the use of sustainable aviation fuel,” Minister Husic said.
“It’s terrific to see CSIRO’s excellent work in lockstep with the Albanese Government’s ambition to create Australian jobs and hit our emissions reduction targets.”
Minister Husic said this large-scale scientific and collaborative research initiative will also help regional areas.
“The program aims to help some of our regions navigate the transition to net zero through new collaborations and analysis,” he said.
Minister Husic said CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, is uniquely placed to help us meet our net zero challenge.
“Through its National Missions programs, CSIRO is helping Australian businesses and communities solve difficult challenges, including reaching net zero using pathways most appropriate to them,” Minister Husic said.
“By supporting these sectors, the Towards Net Zero Mission will use Australian know-how and be a major stepping-stone for Australia’s pathway to lower emissions.”
