Debt continues to blow out under Liberals 15 February 2024

Tas Labor

Yesterday’s Revised Estimates Report shows how 10 years of a Liberal Government has wrecked Tasmania’s finances, and is an admission from Jeremy Rockliff that he will never deliver a budget surplus.

Trying to hide this shocking report late in the afternoon on the day of an election announcement shows that the Rockliff minority Government doesn’t want Tasmanians knowing their spending is out of control.

Tasmania’s deficit is up $224 million to over half a billion dollars, debt has blown out to $6.1 billion and their promised surplus in 25/26 is completely gone. This is at a time when interest rates on debt is also sky rocketing, spiralling the state further into the red.

Let’s not forget: when the Liberals were elected ten years ago Tasmania was completely debt-free.

How Premier Jeremy Rockliff could stand up and claim his minority Government are strong economic managers is beyond me.

All Tasmanians have got to show for 10 years of Liberal Government economic mismanagement is a health, housing, cost of living crisis and spiralling debt and deficits.

What Tasmanians need is stability when it comes to the management of the state’s finances and a Labor Government will step up and once again fix a Liberal budget mess.
