Delivering for Territorians: Howard Springs to Coolalinga Pedestrian and Cycle Path now Complete

Residents of Howard Springs and Coolalinga and Territory cyclists now have more options with construction now complete on the new Howard Springs to Coolalinga path.

This new shared pedestrian and cycle path provides a link from Coolalinga to Darwin city.

The $3 million contract was awarded to Territory company THE Mining Pty Ltd in May 2019 and supported over 50 jobs during construction.

On average 82 cyclists use the existing shared path between Palmerston and Howard Springs each day, with a peak of 111 cyclists using the path daily in July.

The new path will follow the route of the old North Australian Rail Corridor, promoting alternative travel options for residents, visitors and commuters between Coolalinga, Howard Springs, Palmerston and Darwin – significantly extending the regional shared path network.

The path will incorporate heritage features which include the remaining structures of two original railway bridges and other elements of the National Australian Rail Corridor – acknowledging the history behind it.

For safety reasons there is no vehicle access along or across the path. However, a formal crossing is in place where the path connects to Grice Crescent.

Quotes attributed to Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Eva Lawler:

“The path encourages Territorians and visitors to enjoy the healthy lifestyle benefits of exercise on a custom built shared user path whilst also preserving the rich history of the rail corridor.

“Territorians have been asking for a new shared pathway and we have delivered on that – creating a safer and healthier option for locals and tourists to travel between Darwin, Palmerston, Coolalinga and Howard Springs.

“The Territory Labor Government’s priority is creating local jobs and supporting Territory businesses. This project alone supported more than 50 jobs – this is why we are delivering continuous high levels of investment in Government infrastructure projects.
