Diversity on show for the fearless

Female soldiers from the Australian Army turned a spotlight on the diverse opportunities available to women in the Australian Defence Force at the Fearless Festival in Devonport, Tasmania, from August 10-11.

Representatives from Army’s 2nd Force Support Battalion and the 12th/40th Battalion, The Royal Tasmania Regiment, joined sailors and aviators to engage with young Tasmanian women during the two-day trade expo and gala dinner, shedding light on the various roles and careers within Defence.

Keynote speaker at the gala dinner, Chief of Personnel Lieutenant General Natasha Fox, shared her inspiring journey from a student at Don College in Devonport to her current prestigious rank – a testament to the opportunities the Army offers, which resonated with many in attendance.

“Being fearless is not about being without fear. It is about being brave, showing courage and taking small steps in your own way. It is about being kind, helping others and doing the right thing,” Lieutenant General Fox said.

“We are never alone, we have hope and we cheer on each other’s success – together, women in the Australian Defence Force can be, and are, fearless.”

Sergeant Justine Bohem, of the 10th Force Support Battalion, is one of only three female sergeant cargo specialists in the Army, and was on the expo floor engaging with attendees.

“Many of the women visiting our stand didn’t know about the different roles the Army offered,” she said.

“We were able to highlight the trades and exciting opportunities available, and the response was really positive.”

Sergeant Bohem enjoyed her role speaking with school-aged women at the expo.

“I love being down here. Anything that is women empowerment, I love being part of it and showing that women can do it too,” she said.

Fearless Festival’s focus on engagement with young women plays a significant role in connecting Army with potential female recruits.

The event showcased the Army’s commitment to diversifying its ranks and providing tangible insights to those considering a career in Defence.
