Today, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and the Queensland Family and Child Commission (QFCC) launched their #DoIKnowU campaign to educate young people, parents, carers and educators about the behaviours which prevent, recognise and respond to online grooming.
The campaign demonstrates the tactics predators use to trap young people into sharing sexual images of themselves.
The information is based on real life transcripts provided by Argos and the campaign was created in collaboration with young people.
Children can stay safe online by:
- knowing someone in real life before accepting their friend request online
- limiting how much personal information they share online
- telling someone to slow down or block and delete a person if they feel uncomfortable
- know it is illegal to create, send, or have sexual images of someone (including yourself) who looks under the age of 18
Detective Inspector Jon Rouse said online grooming can start with a simple friend request.
“Do you really know who your children are talking to online?” Detective Inspector Rouse said.
Detective Inspector Glen Donaldson encourages parents to have a serious conversation with their kids regarding internet safety.
“Nothing is so bad that you can’t confide in a trusted adult,” Detective Inspector Donaldson said.
“No one society is more or less vulnerable than the other, so the QPS is encouraging all parents and carers to ask themselves if they know how to protect their kids online.”
