Two people have died following a landslip in the Blue Mountains this afternoon.
About 1.40pm today (Monday 4 April 2022), emergency services were called to Wentworth Pass, Wentworth Falls, after reports of a concern for welfare for five bushwalkers following a landslip in the vicinity of the pass.
A rescue operation involving local police, Police Rescue, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance paramedics, National Parks & Wildlife Services, Blue Mountains detectives, PolAir and rescue helicopters, commenced to retrieve the five people.
Despite efforts by emergency services, two people – a 49-year-old man and a 9-year-boy – died at the scene.
Just before 6pm, a 50-year-old woman and second boy – aged 14 – were winched from the location and taken to Westmead Hospital and the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, both in critical conditions.
A 15-year-old girl was walked out by emergency services and treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for shock and taken to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Officers from Blue Mountains Police Area Command have commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The five people are all members of the same family and are British nationals who were holidaying in Australia. The British Consulate is assisting in the matter.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
