East Gippsland Shire Council adopted the Eagle Point Marine and Coastal Management Plan at the November 12 meeting. The plan reflects the community’s aspirations and will guide the management, protection and improvement of the Eagle Point foreshore for the next 10 years.

Community consultation was undertaken in 2015 and 2018 and the feedback received during that process has helped to inform the vision, actions and priorities in the plan.

Mayor Cr John White said the plan identifies the importance of connectivity and walking tracks along the foreshore throughout Eagle Point, and the need for maintenance and improvement. It also identifies upgrades to foreshore facilities such as buildings and key recreation precincts.

“Council endorsed the concept plan for the development of a community hub; single storey multi-purpose building next to the existing barbecue shelter. The plan also includes an upgrade to the children’s playground, a water play space and café to support and promote tourism opportunities in the area,” Cr White said.

“It’s vital to maintain the neighbourhood character of Eagle Point while improving open spaces and protection of flora and fauna, developing pedestrian connectivity and providing infrastructure that supports work, leisure and lifestyle.”

The plan includes a business plan and landscape master plan concept which identifies improvements and priorities for the foreshore. Key themes include vegetation management, community facilities, paths and trails, water-based activities and recreation.

“A new project was included at the request of Gippsland Ports to upgrade Eagle Point Jetty, which will be a fantastic facility for the community,” Cr White said.

“The quiet coastal character and intrinsic connection to the natural environment are some of the reasons people value Eagle Point and the foreshore is one of the most significant attractions for residents and visitors.”

Council will now seek approval from the relevant State Government Minister. With these approvals in place, Council will begin working through the various actions identified in the plan over the next 10 years.

Council also endorsed an application to the Community Infrastructure Loans Scheme to fund the $3.3 million Eagle Point community hub. If the funding submission is successful the project will be part of the 2020/21 budget.
