Easter Long Weekend Traffic Operation Results

Over the Easter long weekend, South Australia Police conducted a state-wide traffic operation from Thursday 28 March – Monday 1 April 2024.

The aim of the operation was to deter and detect traffic behaviours that contribute to harm on our roads.

Unfortunately, there were three lives lost and 18 serious injuries reported during Operation Safe Holidays Easter 2024.

In comparison, during Operation Safe Holidays Easter 2023, there were two lives lost and seven serious injuries reported.

Over the long weekend, 102 drivers recorded a blood alcohol reading over the legal limit and 68 drivers returned a positive result to drug testing.

The highest alcohol reading recorded was a 57 year old male from Modbury Heights who was pulled over and tested because he was displaying a poor manner of driving and recorded a BA reading six times over the legal BAC limit.

During the operation, there were 1,196 speeding offences and 59 seatbelt infringements detected.

A concerning 76 drivers were caught using their mobile phones.

A total of 99 vehicles were impounded and 134 immediate loss of license notices were issued during the operation.

756 dangerous road use related offences were detected, including give way offences, fail to keep safe distance and lane behavioural offences.

Superintendent Darren Fielke, Officer in Charge, Traffic Services Branch said, “The results of Operation Safe Holidays Easter 2024 coupled with the tragic loss of three lives over this period shows that we still have a lot of work to do collectively as a road using community to reduce trauma and make our roads a safe place to travel.

“It is the responsibility of all road users whether you are in a vehicle, on motorbike or you are pedestrian to play a part in making the roads safe.

“All road users need to think carefully about the choices they make to avoid life changing or tragic outcomes for themselves or others.”
