Tens of thousands of sports fans are expected to converge on Queensland’s major sporting venues over the next week for a cracking Easter of sports events.
Minister for Sport Mick de Brenni said the Easter long weekend is a great opportunity for families to catch a game or be inspired by the state’s sporting heroes.
“Queenslanders are well known for their passion for sport, and they will certainly live up to that title as a host of sporting events get underway,” Mr de Brenni said.
“The Brisbane Lions’ incredible start to the season has The Gabba expecting a sell-out crowd for the first time since 2010 for their upcoming match against the Collingwood Magpies.
“There’s talk of the clash becoming a permanent or semi-permanent slot, so we’d love to see Brisbane supporters out in force, and I’m sure a full-house can drive them to a win.
“Also this weekend, at Suncorp Stadium the Roar will take on the Jets in the A-League, while the Gold Coast Titans will take on the Newcastle Knights at Cbus Super Stadium in the NRL.
“Queensland’s Ash Barty will lead the charge for Australia in the tennis when they take on Belarus at the Queensland Tennis Centre in the Fed Cup semi-final, and the chance to see her play and potentially secure Australia’s spot in the Fed Cup for the first time since 1993 is a must-see.
“And if the spectacle leaves you inspired, or you’ve just overdone the Easter chocolate, there’s plenty of opportunities to get active, including the school holiday aquatic program at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, or a ‘come and try’ session with Cycling Queensland at the Anna Meares Velodrome.
“Not only do major sporting events help to inspire people to get active, but they boost tourism by giving visitors an opportunity to add a world-class sporting event at a world-class venue to their travelling itinerary,” he said.
