Kids took over the classroom at Edendale Community Environment Farm this week as part of the Kids Teaching Kids Conference.
It was the tenth year Nillumbik Shire Council and Banyule City Council, together with Eltham North Primary School, hosted the conference at the much-loved Eltham community farm on Friday 13 September.
More than 120 students from 12 schools in Nillumbik and Banyule shared their sustainability knowledge as part of the environmental education program.
They joined thousands of students around Australia who held key events to celebrate Kids Teaching Kids Week.
This year’s theme for the conference at Edendale Farm was the War on Waste.
Students gave presentations about the work they are doing in their schools to combat waste and took part in several activities.
Nillumbik Mayor Karen Egan said: “Nillumbik Shire Council is committed to environmental education and is proud to be associated with this conference for young people.”
Nillumbik Council’s Environmental Education Team Leader at Edendale, Carolyn Pickburn, said the conference was a great way for students to learn from other students.
“Kids are more likely to take something on board if they see those from other schools doing it. We hope they take some of the learnings away, things they can do in their own schools and lives, such as living more sustainably,” she said.
Kids Teaching Kids founder and director Arron Wood, who attended the conference, said KTK was the leading peer education program in Australia and it was great to seeing the students in action.
“The War on Waste theme could not be more topical as our society grapples with the important issue that affects us all,” he said.
