Ellie Carpenter named AFC Best Women’s Player of 2020

Westfield Matildas defender Ellie Carpenter has been named the Asian Football Confederation’s Best Women’s Player of 2020!

It is a massive honour for the 20-year-old, acknowledged by football fans around the world as Asia’s Choice for the category.

Carpenter was the youngest player shortlisted for the award, edging out Westfield Matildas teammates Caitlin Foord and Sam Kerr, as well as Japan’s Saki Kumagai to win it.

2020 was a fruitful year for Carpenter, starting it off by helping the Westfield Matildas qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, playing four games and providing three assists in the unbeaten campaign.

She then won the Westfield W-League Grand Final with Melbourne City, having also helped the side claim the W-League Premiership, before signing for European giants Olympique Lyonnais.

Carpenter’s first involvement at the club was in the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final, where she was an unused substitute in Lyon’s historic fifth-straight triumph in the competition.

The full-back has since gone on to cement her spot in Lyon’s starting XI, as the club search for a sixth-successive Champions League crown, and an incredible 15-straight French league title.

And at only 20 years of age, there is still so much ahead for Ellie Carpenter in the world of football.
