Interested community members have an extra week to apply for a seat on the Corangamite Shire Council Municipal Emergency Management Planning Committee.
Council is looking for two community members to help prepare the Shire’s ‘Municipal Emergency Management Plan (MEMP) 2022-2024’ which will identify and assesses emergency risks and measures to reduce and manage them.
Council Manager Environment and Emergency Lyall Bond encouraged community members who are passionate about their community to put up their hand.
“Parts of the Shire have been under pressure in recent years with floods, fires and a pandemic. There is also an increased biosecurity threat at the moment which could impact on our agricultural sector. These are just some of the emergencies this committee identify and plan for.”
“We always hope for the best but we have to be realistic that challenges will happen.”
The committee will:
- identify and assesses emergency related risks, such as flood, fire, pandemic, and heat waves;
- develop measures that reduce and manage the identified risks;
- prepare response and recovery plans for the municipality;
- represent the views of the broader community in emergency management planning; and
- take part in exercises.
The ideal applicant will have strong community links and be able to represent the broader community on emergency management issues. An understanding of emergency management arrangements or risk management is desirable but not essential.
The committee meets a minimum of three times a year with additional meetings as required. Meetings are usually in Camperdown or online during business hours. While the role is voluntary, members will be reimbursed for travel to and from meetings in Camperdown.
The committee will benefit from having diverse members with a wide range of expertise or interest in areas such as farming, land management, conservation, indigenous, tourism and business, aged and disability, youth, arts and culture, or sport.
