The fifth annual Empty Bowls event will be held at Christchurch Grammar School on Sunday 30th August, to help feed hungry Western Australians.
Local WA potters have generously donated over 500 hand-made bowls and some of Perth’s well-known chefs and bakeries have donated delicious soup and bread, together helping raise money for Foodbank WA to provide for the growing number of people seeking food relief throughout the state.
For a $25 ticket, people can choose a beautiful hand-crafted ceramic bowl to keep, fill it with soup and bread and feel good knowing that they are doing their bit to fight hunger in our community.
The event has been organised by Janet Pyke, mother of footballing legend Don Pyke, for the past four years, and this year Dee Parker from White Peacock Studios and Liz Berry will be hosting the Empty Bowls fundraiser with all proceeds going to Foodbank WA to help fight hunger in Western Australia.
Dee Parker said, “Being involved in the event previously, and now having the opportunity to organise this event, has allowed us, not only to place beautiful bowls into people’s hands, but to actually take an active role in reducing hunger in our community.”
“There’s a lot happening this year, we have entertainment from some of WAAPA’s finest music students who have kindly offered to play for us while we dine. Also an exciting auction of donated art pieces by some distinguished and well-known WA potters, painters and glass artists.”
West Australian Don Hancey Food Ambassador, Taste Budds, Kalis, Café Mojo, Glen Forrest Gourmet, Jeremy’s Exclusive Butcher, Midland Meals Soup Kitchen have donated soup to fill the bowls while Lawleys (Nedlands), Barretts (Nedlands), The Woodfire Baker and Turkish Bakeries, have donated bread. Renowned local chefs Don Hancey, Sophie Budd and Peter Manifis will be serving soup on the day along with a team of willing volunteers.
There will also be an auction of art pieces donated by local distinguished artists including an original painting by William Boissevain.
Greg Hebble, Foodbank WA CEO said “this is such a feel-good community event, so we are thrilled that it is going ahead for the fifth consecutive year. Every ticket purchased will help us provide 50 meals for people who are struggling to put food on the table and pay the bills during these challenging times.”
“Even before COVID-19 hunger was a daily reality for tens of thousands of West Aussies, however over the past few months we have seen a growing number of people reaching out for help, many for the first time ever.”
Empty Bowls is an initiative that started in Michigan over 27 years ago where potters raised funds to assist with food relief. Since then Empty Bowls events have been taking place all over the world.
