eReferrals mean better, safer and faster healthcare for all Tasmanians

Guy Barnett, Minister for Health

Tasmanian doctors, nurses and clinicians are embracing the eReferrals system with more than 22,000 eReferrals received since it was introduced in May 2023.

The eReferral system replaces outdated fax, email, printed and scanned written referrals used by many doctors with instantaneous online updates.

The new system is helping support more efficient healthcare delivery across Tasmania.

Minister for Health, Guy Barnett, said the secure system also keeps GPs better informed by instantly updating them when a referral is received by the specialist service or clinic.

“This means that GPs know their patient’s referral has been received and will be actioned without manual follow up, ensuring they have more time to see patients,” Minister Barnett said.

Since its launch, doctors across Tasmania are taking up the new system with more than 1000 eReferrals received each week in late August.

“Pleasingly, healthcare teams across all four major hospitals are reporting the system means referrals are received much faster, and eliminates the need to wait for mail delivery, search through e-mails, or collect paper off the fax machine to manually scan and upload,” Minister Barnett said.

“The eReferral project is part of the Rockliff Liberal Government’s $476 million 10-year Digital Health Transformation, which will deliver a new state-wide fully integrated care platform.

“This will enable our hospitals, GPs, community health, allied health and other specialist providers to seamlessly communicate and share information with each other.”

By sticking to our long term plan to ensure Tasmanians get the healthcare system they deserve, the Rockliff Liberal Government is doing what matters for all Tasmanians.
