A man has been arrested after he allegedly escaped from a minimum-security correctional facility in the state’s Northern Tablelands yesterday.
It was reported to police about 12pm yesterday (Wednesday 17 June 2020), that a man was spotted wearing prison greens in the bushland adjacent to the New England Highway, 15km north of Glen Innes.
Officers attached to New England Police District commenced an investigation and began a search of the area.
About 1.30pm a highway patrol officer observed a white Toyota Landcruiser travelling south on the New England Highway, about 5km from Glen Innes, this vehicle was reported stolen from a nearby property.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle, however, it allegedly failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued into the township of Glen Innes, where the vehicle turned around and collided with the rear of the police vehicle.
The pursuit was terminated shortly after for safety reasons.
The vehicle was found on West Avenue, Glen Innes, where it is alleged, the man broke into the home and stole items and clothing.
About 2pm, the man was sighted at the local pool jumping a fence and was arrested a short distance away in a building at Wilson Park.
The 29-year-old man was located and arrested in the building and taken to Glenn Innes Police Station.
He was charged with inmate escape/attempt to escape from lawful custody, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, break and enter house steal value and enter inclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse.
The man was refused bail to appear at Tamworth Local Court (via AVL) today (Thursday 18 June 2020).
