The City of Launceston is seeking expressions of interest in relation to the future use of a historic school building at 56 Frederick St, with submissions closing on Friday, November 3.
Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said he was looking forward to viewing some creative and dynamic proposals for the historic building, which was originally opened as a school on March 2 1836.
Ownership of the building was transferred to the City of Launceston in 1885 with the site most recently operating as a childcare centre.
“Whether a project proponent wants to partner with the Council, or to work independently, we’re hopeful of seeing some unique community-centred proposals put forward for this site,” Mayor Garwood said.
“The building represents such a unique piece of history for Launceston; it’s really representative of a bygone era and there are many opportunities for its ongoing use.
“Having been operated with a educational and community focus, I’m sure we all know someone or even ourselves who have a connection to Fredrick St. If the walls could talk I think we’d hear some pretty interesting stories.
“Speaking personally, I would love to see a proposal that continues to see that history of community focus carried forward and represented into the future, but the Council is bringing an open mind to this process.
“We really encourage these expression of interest to help us to find a new and vibrant use for this wonderful building, and we’ve extended the deadline for submissions until Friday, November 3”
