Peter Gutwein has today given Tasmanians no clarity on when the state’s borders will reopen.
Labor Leader Rebecca White said it’s difficult to understand the lack of clarity given Tasmania’s COVID status.
“We’ve learned today that Tasmania has no active cases of COVID-19. That’s an excellent achievement and is due to the sacrifice and effort of all Tasmanians.
“That achievement should be rewarded with clarity on when deeply affected sectors of the economy will be in a position to resume something like normal operation.
“Today should have been the day Premier Peter Gutwein set a date for the state borders to reopen.
“Nobody is asking him to act hastily or in a way that would put public health at risk.
“The Premier could and should put appropriate caveats on any decision to re-open state borders.
“But he needs to set a date so that businesses have clarity and can begin planning to restart their operations.
“This is particularly important for the hospitality and tourism sectors which are most affected by the ongoing uncertainty.
“New Zealand relaxed its restrictions at the point where it achieved zero cases. We have seen other states today set a date for their borders to reopen.
“Without a target to aim for, businesses remain rudderless. I call on Peter Gutwein to name a date so that business can being the long process of recovery.”
