Hurstville Museum & Gallery’s newest Dragon Lair Gallery exhibition ‘Feel the Emotion, Feel the Heart’ features the work of students from Brushlovers Art Studio and will be open to the public from 24 June-23 July 2023.

Brushlovers Art Studio offers intimate classes for school aged children ranging from beginners to HSC visual art students and this exhibition showcases the amazing work of these students.

Reflecting on the questions ‘Can I be myself? Am I as perfect as people think? Am I happy or unhappy?’ students responded to how our well-being has been negatively impacted during the pandemic. Through mixed media, this exhibition allows these artists to express their emotions and feelings closest to their heart.

Director and artist Louisa Xu explains that all lessons at Brushlovers are “carefully designed with a good balance of developing fundamental skills and creativity in a fun and playful environment. We encourage students to experiment and explore all art media and try different artistic styles with the aim to find the styles the students love”.

Louisa’s artwork focuses on her subjective consciousness, which she finds therapeutic. She explains that creating art is like a mirror that reflects the inner workings of the mind, particularly deeply felt emotions that are hard to put into words.

“I want to know, what are all the emotions inside my body? If I take all the emotions out of my chest and mind, what would they look like? This is where inspiration for my artworks come from. I feel relief and calm while I slowly create my works piece by piece”.

Mayor Nick Katris said, “It is great to see an organisation such as Brushlovers Art Studio, that focuses on the arts and teaching young people in our community a way to express their emotions and feelings in an individual and artistic way. The pandemic affected young people in a negative way, and for them to have this space and outlet to express themselves is fantastic.
