Festival-goers reminded to stay safe ahead of Yours and Owls Festival at Wollongong, NSW

Police are reminding the Wollongong community and its visitors to stay safe and look out for one another ahead of this weekend’s Yours and Owls Festival in Wollongong.

A high visibility police operation will commence this Saturday (5 October 2019) and conclude on Sunday (6 October 2019), focusing on alcohol and drug related crime, violence and anti-social behaviour.

The operation involves officers from Wollongong Police District, the NSW Police Dog Unit, Mounted Unit, Public Order Riot Squad, Operations Support Group, Police Transport Command and other specialist command support.

Wollongong Police District Commander, Acting Superintendent Amanda Hancock said there will be a strong focus on high visibility policing for the duration of the event.

“Police resources from across the state will be assisting our officers from Wollongong in targeting any anti-social behaviour,” Acting Superintendent Hancock said.

“We want to ensure that everyone attending the Yours and Owls Festival has a great time, and we are continuing to work closely with event organisers to ensure the event occurs in the safest possible environment.

“We understand people want to enjoy a drink and a dance with friends, and we’re not here to spoil you’re fun – but rest assured anyone who engages in any anti-social behaviour will face the full brunt of the law.

“Police will maintain a strong presence and if you are seen behaving anti-socially, you will be evicted from the event and if you’re behaving criminally, you’ll be arrested.”

Additional officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command will be deployed to ensure everyone gets to and from the event safely.

The Yours and Owls Festival officially kicks off this Saturday (5 October 2019) and runs over two days.
