Stroke Foundation is reminding Australians to get behind the incredible individuals in our community, who are making life better for people with stroke, by nominating them for the 2021 Stroke Awards.
The Stroke Foundation Stroke Awards are held annually, recognising inspirational carers, survivors of stroke, researchers, health professionals, volunteers and members of the community who go above and beyond – often voluntarily – to help ease the burden of stroke.
Nominations for the 2021 Stroke Awards close on Friday 12 February.
Marge and Ron Townrow from Bendigo won the 2020 Improving life after stroke Award. Since Ron’s stroke 20 years ago, Ron and Marge have dedicated their lives to raising awareness of the disease and supporting others. This has included hospital visits, running a stroke support group and sharing their lived experience as a survivor and carer at health forums and on committees.
Ron said it was a surprise and an honour to be nominated for the Stroke Awards, let alone to win one.
“Although life changes after stroke, we are firm believers in having a positive mindset, being patient and never giving up,” Ron said.
“It was heartening to see so many worthy Stroke Award finalists who shared that perspective and had made valuable contributions to their communities.”
The 2021 Stroke Foundation Stroke Awards run across six categories: Improving Life After Stroke Award, Creative Award, Fundraiser of the Year Award, Courage Award, Volunteer of the Year Award and President’s Achievement Award.
Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Sharon McGowan said she is expecting to see very different entries this year due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
“The year 2020 was challenging for many in the stroke community, but I am looking forward to seeing the innovative ways people adapted to the changed environment,” Ms McGowan said.
“From taking on new creative pursuits to exploring different approaches to rehabilitation, advocacy and raising funds, there are many endeavours that deserve to be recognised.
“If you know someone who should be celebrated for their dedication to stroke, please nominate them. It’s a wonderful way of letting them know their efforts are appreciated and important.”
Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability. It happens in an instant and its impact can be devastating.
Winners will be announced at the Stroke Foundation’s Stroke Awards ceremony in Melbourne during May.
