Firearms seized in planned police operation at Cooee

A 74-year-old Tasmanian man is facing numerous firearms charges, after police located several unregistered firearms, ammunition, and some explosives at a Cooee property.

Detective Acting Inspector Tony Stewart said police attended the property in Cooee yesterday afternoon to conduct a firearm storage inspection.

“After entering the residence and making initial observations, police obtained a warrant, and a search of the property was undertaken,” he said.

“Police remain at the property today, with further searches being carried out, but at this stage police have located several illegal firearms.”

“We have also located a significant amount of ammunition and some old explosives material.”

“The Bomb Response Group will be undertaking a controlled detonation to safely dispose of the explosive materials this afternoon.”

“Police are engaging with local home and businesses, and there is no threat to broader community, however people may hear a loud noise when the materials are detonated.”

“Access to Cooee Point Beach is being restricted and traffic controls are in place on Turrung Street and Cooee Point Road.”

“I would like to thank the Cooee community for their patience and understanding while the police activity has been taking place.”

“Police take every opportunity to take illegal firearms and explosives off our streets through operations such as this and having the community’s support is integral.”

Anyone with information about illegal firearms or explosive materials is urged to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers at crimestopperstas.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
