First date might be his last

A man has made a poor first impression after being caught speeding in Doveton while on his way to a date last night.

State Highway Patrol members were patrolling the inbound lanes of the Monash Freeway when they were overtaken by a VW Golf allegedly travelling at 120km/h about 9pm.

The driver allegedly then increased his speed to 161km/h and was intercepted by police.

When asked why he was driving at such a dangerous speed, he said he was running late for a first date.

Hopefully his date picked up the bill, as the 22-year-old’s car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1006.

He is also expected to be charged on summons with driving at a speed dangerous and exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h.

This impound forms part of Operation Roadwise, a state-wide road policing operation during the high-risk Christmas period.

Police are targeting impaired driving, speed, distraction, and fatigue in high-risk areas throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

The operation commenced at 12.01am on Friday, 16 December and concludes at 23.59pm on Tuesday, 27 December.
