Five free ways to save energy and money this winter

Winter energy bills can come as a shock to many of us but they shouldn’t have to. There are heaps of free and easy ways to save energy – and money – this winter that won’t compromise your warmth.

A win for you, a win for the environment.

1. Let natural light in during the day

When the sun comes up in the morning, open south and west-facing curtains and blinds and let the sun heat your home throughout the day.

2. Close curtains and doors at night

Once the sun goes down, close curtains, blinds and windows to keep the sun-heated air inside at night. This can save you $50 a year in unused heating.

3. ‘Zone’ your home by warming the rooms you use the most

Once you’ve switched your heating on, close the doors to rooms you are not using and seal all gaps with door snakes so you’re not losing valuable warmth.

4. Switch on your ceiling fan

It might seem counterintuitive to use your fan to keep warm, but switching your ceiling fan to low and setting it to spin clockwise (where possible) actually pushes heated air back down to you, keeping the room warmer.

5. Rug up and use blankets

Our bodies are natural heaters, running at a balmy 37 degrees. Harvest and lock in that warmth by wearing warm clothes indoors and using winter bed linen (like an extra blanket or flannelette sheets) instead of relying on the heater throughout the day.
