Five historic steam engines return to the tracks this weekend

Five century-old steam locomotives will be on show at the 30th annual Thirlmere Festival of Steam this weekend which marks the beginning of the 2019 steam season.

“We’ll have five historic engines in steam throughout the weekend at the NSW Rail Museum, including the recently overhauled, 117-year-old locomotive, 3265,” said Transport Heritage NSW CEO, Andrew Moritz.
“In addition to steam train rides, visitors can enjoy cab visits, steam machinery, live steam models, spotlight talks and more at the NSW Rail Museum.”
On Sunday, the town will come to life with market stalls, live entertainment, a vintage car show, street parade and amusement rides.
As part of the 30th anniversary celebration, His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales, and Mrs. Linda Hurley will be in attendance.
“His Excellency will take a steam train ride, travel in the Grand Parade and inspect the Governor-General’s carriage, which carried the Queen and Prince Phillip during their state visit in 1954,” said Mr. Moritz.
Visitors will be treated to two days of activity:
  • On Saturday, the NSW Rail Museum will be open with steam train rides, driver’s cab visits, a steam and vintage park, mini-train rides and more!
  • On Sunday, it’s double the fun as Thirlmere comes to life with over 180 market stalls, live performances, a vintage car show, street parade and all the activities at the NSW Rail Museum, including steam train rides.
The Thirlmere Festival of Steam will be held on 2 – 3 March 2019.
