The Marshall Liberal Government welcomes the City of Onkaparinga Council’s vote to introduce fortnightly green organics collection for their residents.
This move now means that all metropolitan councils will or have moved towards fortnightly green bin collection, greatly reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.
Minister for Environment and Water David Speirs said South Australia is a nation leader when it comes to waste management.
“South Australia has a proven history when it comes to waste management, recycling and resource recovery,” said Minister Speirs.
“The vote from the Onkaparinga Council to move to fortnightly green bin collection will help divert more waste from landfill into composting facilities which generates significant environmental and economic benefits for South Australia.
“Food and green organic waste makes up almost half of the weight in our waste bins and I encourage all council areas to try and move more of this waste into their green organics bins.
“The City of Onkaparinga currently only diverts 44.7 per cent of all waste from landfill whereas those councils with a 2-weekly recycling and 2-weekly organics are achieving between 55 to 58 per cent diversion.
“Waste collection is one of the core responsibilities of local government and I have been working closely with Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson on this initiative and I commend her leadership.
“Importantly, the Council could become eligible to apply for State Government funding under the Green Industries SA Kerbside Performance Incentives.
“This program can contribute up to $10 per household which could provide the City of Onkaparinga significant funding to help with their waste management.
“The Marshall Liberal Government is always looking at ways we can improve waste management, recycling and resource recovery and this move by the Onkaparinga Council is welcomed.”
