Four modular homes ready for social housing tenants in Tom Price

  • 59 modular homes now contracted and underway for regional social housing and a further four homes for Regional Government workers
  • Majority of modular homes to be delivered across regional WA
  • 10 contracts worth approximately $13.5 million for the Pilbara Region
  • Part of the McGowan Government’s reforms to increase social housing stock through modular build program
  • Modular and prefabricated construction being tested at scale for sustainable and quick delivery
  • Four new modular homes transported to Tom Price earlier this year have now been completed and are ready to house tenants from the Pilbara region’s public housing wait list.

Two, two-bedroom and two, one-bedroom homes built in Perth by Modular WA and delivered to Tom Price on trucks were finalised in August

The Department of Communities is in the process of allocating the homes to applicants from the public housing wait list and expects they will be tenanted by September 2022.

The State Government’s modular housing program is boosting the State’s social housing, with 59 dwellings contracted (including the four completed in Tom Price) and a further four contracted for Government workers.

The Modular Build Program is focused on areas of high demand and was made possible by the State Government’s $875 million allocation towards social housing in the State Budget.

The additional investment takes the State Government’s commitments to social housing to more than $2.1 billion over the coming four years, which will include the delivery of around 3,300 new social dwellings as well as refurbishments and maintenance work to many thousands more.

Five new modular homes for South Hedland are currently under construction and on track to be completed in September 2022.

As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:

“This Government continues to do all it can to boost social housing stock across Western Australia.

“Our Government is utilising alternative construction methods, which includes the modular build program and timber frame construction, along with restoration projects, bringing vacant stock back into the system, spot purchasing and converting unused Government Regional Officers’ Housing properties.

“Modular housing and timber frame construction are two alternatives that are delivering social housing to Western Australia’s most vulnerable people much sooner than traditional construction methods can do.

“This is part of the McGowan Government’s $2.4 billion investment in housing and homelessness services in WA over the next four years, including the delivery of around 3,300 new social dwellings as well as refurbishments and maintenance work to many thousands more.”
