Townsville City Council will continue to support CBD traders by transitioning back to free 15-minute parking in the city from Monday 18 July.
Mayor Jenny Hill said everyone would be entitled to free 15-minute parking at all 2P parking spots in the city.
“Fifteen-minute parking gives people enough time to grab a cup of coffee from one of the many excellent cafes, return a library book, post a letter or run some errands,” Cr Hill said.
“If anyone needs to stay longer, all it will cost is $1 an hour up to a maximum of $6 for the day to park in the city. This is among some of the cheapest parking rates in Queensland.”
Deputy Mayor Mark Molachino said 15-minute free parking would recommence on July 18 with the current two-hour free parking at 2P parking spots concluding on July 15. Parking is free on weekends, with time limits still enforced.
“The two-hour free parking was a temporary measure introduced in February following a peak COVID-19 outbreak earlier in the year,” Cr Molachino said.
“Continuing to offer free parking for 15-minutes strikes the right balance between giving people enough time to quickly pop into a shop or run an errand, and ensures parking spaces are available for anyone who wants to come into the CBD.
“For those wanting to stay longer, there are plenty of 2P, 4P and 8P parking spots, or for less than a 15-minute walk, people can use one of the free all-day parking sites along Sturt Street, Flinders Street, Dean Street or Eyre Street.”
