Mildura Rural City Council will celebrate Harmony Week with a free community event this Friday aimed at celebrating and increasing understanding of our region’s rich cultural diversity.

A Taste of Harmony

Friday 22 March

6.30pm to 9pm

Powerhouse Place – Hugh King Drive

Councillor for Community Development Helen Healy said Harmony Week brings together Australians from all different backgrounds and is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for everyone, regardless of cultural or linguistic background.

The event is being delivered in partnership with Mildura Rural City Council, AMES Australia, Catholic Care, Mallee Accommodation and Support Program (MASP), Mildura English Language Centre and Sunraysia Mallee Ethnic Communities Council (SMECC), celebrating this year’s theme ‘Everyone belongs’.

There will be food, art, activities and entertainment from a broad range of backgrounds on offer. The community is encouraged to dress in orange or clothing that represents their culture, and to bring along their country’s flag to display.

Those who wish to attend the event are asked to bring along a chair, blanket or rug to sit on.

“The A Taste of Harmony community event will provide an opportunity to celebrate and learn more about our region’s diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives,” Cr Healy said.

“Cultural diversity is at the heart of who we are, and I encourage everyone to come along as we immerse ourselves in the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our wonderful community.

“We’re so fortunate to have such a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures in our region, and our shared values of respect, equality and freedom are what makes Sunraysia such a great place to live.”

Harmony Week coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March. This is a day to acknowledge and show solidarity with people working to combat systemic and structural racial discrimination that still exists in Australia and across the world.
