Those heading to Tasmania’s East Coast this festive season are encouraged to visit the state’s less visited beaches and campgrounds.
As locals and visitors alike gear up for the Christmas break Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan, has reminded Tasmanians that the popular Friendly Beaches campground and day use area remain closed following September’s bushfire.
“The area was severely damaged by the fire and the National Parks and Wildlife Service is continuing work to rehabilitate the site and ensure safety.
“The fire destroyed almost every asset in the Isaacs Point campground, including two toilet blocks, the beach viewing platform, guideposts, fencing and signage.
“I want to thank the public for their patience while this important recovery work is completed and ask them to continue to observe all signage and not enter the closed sites until it is declared safe to do so.
“I’d urge holidaymakers to plan ahead before visiting the area.”
The southern alternative day use only area at Friendly Beaches is open for visitors.
Tasmania’s list of beautiful beaches and camp areas is nearly endless. If you’re visiting the East Coast and looking for a place to pull up or pitch your tent why not check out a new location, such as:
* River and Rocks – free camping north of Coles Bay;
* Chain of Lagoons – free camping between Scamander and Bicheno; and
* Freycinet National Park – Richardsons Beach campground is fully booked until February 2024, however, keep an eye out for cancellations.
