- More than $4 million delivered to help community clubs recover equipment, rebuild infrastructure and return to full operations.
- The Sport and Recreation Recovery Grants are jointly funded by the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments.
The Albanese and Crisafulli Governments are delivering funding for an additional 27 sporting clubs to help repair facilities, replace equipment and return to full operations following ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
The clubs will share in more than $4 million in recovery funding to help them rebuild and restore community sport including:
- More than $320,000 for Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club to assist with restoration of fields and replacement of cricket.
- More than $350,000 for the Gold Coast Mountain Bike Club to assist with repair and restoration of trails.
- Nearly $400,000 for Nudgee Golf Club for course repairs and replacement of supporting infrastructure.
- Nearly $750,000 for the Hervey Bay Bowls Club to help rebuild and replace its artificial greens.
A total of 51 sports infrastructure projects are now being supported after sporting clubs and councils across 18 South East Queensland local government areas were impacted by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March last year.
The Sport and Recreation Recovery Grants are jointly funded by the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Kristy McBain said the investment was about helping communities recover faster and ensuring sport remains accessible for families right across the region.
“Community sporting clubs are the heart of towns and suburbs right across South East Queensland, and we’re making sure they have the support they need to recover and thrive,” Minister McBain said.
“This funding is helping clubs get back on their feet faster, whether that’s repairing facilities, replacing equipment or creating safe, welcoming spaces for people to come together again after a disaster.
“We know how important local clubs are in bringing people together, especially after tough events like ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.”
Acting Minister for Sport and Racing and Acting Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Andrew Powell said the funding would support clubs from Nerang to Hervey Bay, and west to Toowoomba.
“The impacts from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred were felt far and wide, with many sporting clubs forced to close or reduce operations while they got back on their feet,” Minister Powell said.
“Community sport is an essential part of life for many Queenslanders, which is why our support through the Sport and Recreation Recovery Grants is so important.
“This funding helps to replace damaged playing surfaces, fencing, concrete paths and vital sporting equipment.
“We want to help clubs and councils bounce back stronger after severe weather events, so they can keep supporting active, healthy and connected Queensland communities.”
